Inspiring next generation of scientists

In September 2022 post graduate students from the EPSRC Centres for Doctoral Training in Advanced Therapeutics and Nanomedicines and Transformative Pharmaceutical Technologies and staff from the School of Pharmacy, hosted visits for over 150 children and teachers from West Park School, Debry, Henry Whipple School, Arnold and Bramcote Hills School in the School of Pharmacy teaching laboratories.

The primary school children took part in 3 different activities: making their own medicine (a potion!!), learning about targeted drug delivery in the body, and then experimenting with solids, liquids and gases. The children were so excited and inspired that they said “it was the best day ever.” Whilst the secondary school students were degradation detectives (analysing aspirin), designed a painkiller and manufactured tablets. The secondary school students were also really inspired and said “It was a very fun experience. I loved doing the experiments and learning about the university” and also said “ I would love to visit again.”

The school visits were organised and led by Dr Catherine Finch, Dr Maria Marlow and Matt Calladine.  However, it was a great team effort from the School of Pharmacy and post graduate students and the activities were supported by Amy Nash, Beppe Mantovani, Chloe Stewart, Cynthia Bosquillon, Ella Vickers, Fiona Smith, Graham Harrison, James Beswick, John Shaw, John Korwin Granford, Merryn Hughes, Mischa Zelzer, Pavel Gershkovich and Snow Stolnik-Trenkic.
